#5 year piano prodigy series
It was in the 90's, in Switzerland, that Belina began to play with the Basel and Zurich symphonies, winning a series of competitions. Belina considers him one of her most important teachers, in terms of her artistry and style, because he "opened my eyes and ears to the Viennese tradition so important for the whole classical repertory." There was still something more that she needed, and getting it meant moving to Basel, Switzerland, where she studied with an Austrian teacher, Rudolf Buchbinder.
She was also gaining experience performing throughout the country. Moving to Bulgaria's capital, Belina attended the Sofia Music Academy, where she received their highest honors in 1991. At 15, she won a national piano competition the following year a prize for young virtuosos, then an international competition in Italy. It was her first music teachers, Belina said, that helped her master piano techniques. By age 10, Belina said in a recent interview, she began to realize that she would make the piano not only her passion but also her profession. She attended a local school for gifted children and won a competition for the best performance of a Bulgarian composition. It is hard to imagine what a talented child does in a Communist country, where day-to-day life can be so grim. Nestled south of Romania and north of Greece and Turkey, it became a satellite of the Soviet Union after World War II, and, since 1990, has become a democracy. Bulgaria, a country the size of Ohio with a population of about 7.4 million, has a history that dates to the 7th Century. Two years later she performed her first public concert.īelina grew up in Burgas, Bulgaria, a port city on the west coast of the Black Sea that some call the "front garden of God" because of its beautiful beaches and coastline and an abundance of lakes, hot springs and nature parks. She was five when she watched her mother and uncle play the piano at home and decided that it was something she wanted to do. That's what Belina Kostadinova advises, anyway. Children who have a gift for music are not playing around - they like to watch and listen to and feel a real piano. If you notice your toddler doing a little jig when listening to music, don't think of Schroeder hunched over playing Beethoven on his toy piano in the Peanuts comic strip.
